Episode 12 - Rodeo!

Episode 12 - Rodeo!

This week, a bit of the country comes to SoCal in the form of Rodeo's. I attended the Sheriff's Rodeo in Devore and earlier this month, the Hesperia Rodeo in Hesperia and the Tehachapi Rodeo in Tehachapi to see what the craze is all about. I discovered Rodeo is a sport, but more like a community event like a fair, where people dress up in cowboy hats and daisy dukes and cheer on the prowess and skill of both cowboy and animal either working together or competing against each other. Is the Rodeo for you? Is it an outdated practice that's abusive or harmful to animals? Let's dive in a little on this episode!

It's cab 37 00:02:59.199 --> 00:03:19.319 hans. It's it's ropes and the rain. This week I attended the Sheriff's 38 00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:23.639 Rodeo hosted by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department into Vore, California, where 39 00:03:23.680 --> 00:03:28.080 the fifteen and to fifteen freeways meet at the base of the Cajone Pass. 40 00:03:29.240 --> 00:03:31.960 Rodeo is a pretty popular sport in this country, but as far as I 41 00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:36.840 know, the sheriffs Rodeo is the only rodeo event sponsored by an actual law 42 00:03:36.919 --> 00:03:40.159 enforcement agency. I could be wrong. There could be a small sheriffs department 43 00:03:40.240 --> 00:03:44.400 Georgia that hosts one, perhaps, but this is as far as I know. 44 00:03:45.759 --> 00:03:47.840 In addition to the Sheriff's Rodeo, over the past month, I also 45 00:03:47.879 --> 00:03:53.240 attended the Hesperia Rodeo and the to Hatch By Mountain Rodeo and Asperia and to 46 00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:57.719 hatch be respectfully. I bet some of you didn't even know we had rodeos 47 00:03:57.719 --> 00:04:01.000 and SOCl did you, But yes we do. To those of you who 48 00:04:01.039 --> 00:04:03.879 are not overly familiar with a rodeo, allow me to give you a very 49 00:04:03.919 --> 00:04:10.960 brief over your overview. A rodeo is a competitive, competitive exquestrian sport that 50 00:04:11.039 --> 00:04:14.599 a rose out of the working practices of cattle herders in Spain and Mexico, 51 00:04:15.319 --> 00:04:18.600 expanded to the United States and eventually other nations. You've probably all heard of 52 00:04:18.680 --> 00:04:24.480 the Calgary Stampede, for example today. It is a sporting event that involves 53 00:04:24.519 --> 00:04:30.399 horses and other livestock designed to test the skill of participants. I've always wondered 54 00:04:30.480 --> 00:04:33.360 how rodeo got started. I can just picture a bunch of cowboys after a 55 00:04:33.399 --> 00:04:38.399 hard day's work for a hard day's pay on a ranch in Texas, talking 56 00:04:38.399 --> 00:04:42.000 about the meanest bull in the planes, and after a couple of drinks. 57 00:04:42.040 --> 00:04:46.519 Of course, hey couder, bet you can't rob that bullet for five seconds 58 00:04:46.560 --> 00:04:49.759 and out here throwing you off. I'll bet you a silver dollar I can, 59 00:04:49.920 --> 00:04:54.519 boy, you're on. Some of the events you might see at a 60 00:04:54.600 --> 00:04:58.800 rodeo include tie down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronch riding, 61 00:04:59.160 --> 00:05:03.240 bare back bronch riding, bull riding, barrel racing, and mutton busting. 62 00:05:04.480 --> 00:05:08.720 Now tie down roping involves a rider mounted on a horse and a calf. 63 00:05:09.240 --> 00:05:11.920 The goal of the tim to event is for the rider to catch the 64 00:05:11.959 --> 00:05:14.720 calf with a rope, just mount from his horse and restrain it by tying 65 00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:18.519 three legs together and the shortest amount of time possible. Team roping involves a 66 00:05:18.600 --> 00:05:23.480 steer and two mounted riders. The goal is for one cowboy to rope the 67 00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:27.199 steer around the neck and the other to tie the rope around the hind legs 68 00:05:27.560 --> 00:05:32.319 and temporarily restraining in the shortest time possible. Steer wrestling is a rodeo event 69 00:05:32.399 --> 00:05:35.759 that involves a horse mounted rider chasing a steer. In this event, the 70 00:05:35.839 --> 00:05:40.600 rider must drop from his horse onto the steer and wrestle the animal to the 71 00:05:40.680 --> 00:05:44.000 ground by grabbing it by the corns and getting the animal's head to touch the 72 00:05:44.079 --> 00:05:46.399 ground. It's a lot harder than it looks, by the way. You 73 00:05:46.480 --> 00:05:49.720 gotta be a pretty beefy boy to to get that thing down. But I've 74 00:05:49.759 --> 00:05:54.720 seen it done. And saddle bronch riding. A cowboy must ride a bronch 75 00:05:54.800 --> 00:05:59.720 a bucking horse that attempts to throw a throw or buck the cowboy off its 76 00:05:59.759 --> 00:06:02.720 back. This rodeo event was based on the original skills of a working cowboy 77 00:06:02.839 --> 00:06:08.959 trying to tame a horse. Bare Back bronk riding is similar to saddle back 78 00:06:09.040 --> 00:06:13.560 ronk riding, but obviously without a saddle. If you're lucky like I was 79 00:06:13.680 --> 00:06:17.079 the Hissparia rodeo, there is mutton busting. It's not as bad as it 80 00:06:17.160 --> 00:06:21.759 sounds. That's where a very young child okay maybe it is like literally five 81 00:06:21.879 --> 00:06:26.120 or six, rides on the back of a sheep, holding on for dear 82 00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:29.920 life as the sheep runs around trying to get him off. The kids wear 83 00:06:29.959 --> 00:06:32.639 a complete safety get up from helmet to paths, and there are cowboys standing 84 00:06:32.680 --> 00:06:35.759 by uh to grab the kid as soon as it looks like he's about to 85 00:06:35.800 --> 00:06:40.680 fall or as soon as he completes his run for a score. Obviously, 86 00:06:40.759 --> 00:06:44.600 sometimes the kids do fall off, but these are I don't know, these 87 00:06:44.639 --> 00:06:46.000 are prison pretty tough kids. They probably had a lot of practice because they 88 00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:48.920 get right back up. I even have I saw one kid riding in the 89 00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:53.639 sheep and he wrote it. All the keep was thrashing around and he finally 90 00:06:53.680 --> 00:06:57.720 fell off and he just jumps right up and just you know, throws the 91 00:06:57.759 --> 00:07:00.839 peace sign up in the air, and like, uh, you know, 92 00:07:00.920 --> 00:07:03.600 he was all into. The crowd cheered, went crazy and it was just 93 00:07:03.680 --> 00:07:06.519 a lot of fun to watch. The kids even get belt buckles and other 94 00:07:06.560 --> 00:07:11.319 prizes for their actions, and many current rodeo athletes started with mutton busting. 95 00:07:12.120 --> 00:07:15.399 But in any case, it's part way adorable, part way nail biting, 96 00:07:15.480 --> 00:07:17.959 and part way hilarious watching these children hang off her dear life on top of 97 00:07:18.040 --> 00:07:23.399 a sheet. Another event in rodeo is called barrel racing. This is a 98 00:07:23.480 --> 00:07:28.319 sport uh that cowgirls usually participated as opposed to the other events. Barrel racing 99 00:07:28.439 --> 00:07:31.800 is a competitive or let's say, a competition of agility which a rider on 100 00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:36.920 a horse attempts to run a clover leaf pattern around a preset around preset barrels 101 00:07:36.959 --> 00:07:43.160 in the fastest time possible. It requires a combination of of the horses athletic 102 00:07:43.199 --> 00:07:47.040 ability and horsemanship skills of the rider in order to safely and successfully maneuver the 103 00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:51.160 horse around three barrels placed in a triangle pattern. And I'm gonna tell you, 104 00:07:51.720 --> 00:07:56.040 even though this is usually the only event in rodeo that women participate in, 105 00:07:56.519 --> 00:08:00.759 it almost always garners the highest cheers in excitement from the crowd every rodeo 106 00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:07.040 event I've attended, and that includes bull riding. Uh, it's just it's 107 00:08:07.040 --> 00:08:09.720 a race almost, you know. And it's it's nail biting down to the 108 00:08:09.800 --> 00:08:13.519 last second to see if they can beat the time of the previous rider or 109 00:08:13.839 --> 00:08:20.160 who's gonna score best next. Um. Sometimes they just do a magnificent like 110 00:08:20.600 --> 00:08:26.360 uh, turn on a dime around a barrel. Sometimes they nudge the barrel 111 00:08:26.360 --> 00:08:28.759 as long as the barrel doesn't fall over, they don't. They don't lose 112 00:08:28.839 --> 00:08:33.399 points or rather get points added to their to their time. But it's it's 113 00:08:33.559 --> 00:08:37.080 uh, it's a lot of fun to watch. Speaking of bull riding. 114 00:08:37.120 --> 00:08:41.200 By the way, bull riding is what is often considered the heavyweight main event 115 00:08:41.279 --> 00:08:46.600 of rodeo. It's also undoubtedly the most dangerous. Bull Riding is an event 116 00:08:46.679 --> 00:08:50.559 that involves a rider getting on a bucking bull and attempting to stay mounted on 117 00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:54.519 the animal while it tries to buck him off. Sometimes called the most dangerous 118 00:08:54.559 --> 00:08:58.399 eight seconds in sports, the goal is to achieve the highest amount of points 119 00:08:58.480 --> 00:09:03.200 possible from sanction rodeo judges um. Both the rider, the writer's ability and 120 00:09:03.279 --> 00:09:09.240 the activity of the animal are judged in this event. So if the animals 121 00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:13.600 not putting out like the judges think it should, the cowboy's gonna lose points. 122 00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:16.759 The cowboys can't hang on or it just isn't are doing a good job 123 00:09:16.879 --> 00:09:22.919 falling off, he's gonna lose points both of the matter and UH. In 124 00:09:22.120 --> 00:09:28.919 UH saddleback bronch riding as well as UH bull riding. Bull riding has involved 125 00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:33.559 many injuries and even deaths, unfortunately, because once the cowboys knocked off the 126 00:09:33.639 --> 00:09:37.240 bull, the bull doesn't just take off like a horse. It immediately turns 127 00:09:37.279 --> 00:09:43.000 around and seeks retribution. In order to increase safety out of rodeo, professional 128 00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:46.679 bullfighters and rodeo clowns attract the animal so that the cowboy can run sometimes limp 129 00:09:46.879 --> 00:09:52.279 away. Bullfighters don't literally mean UH fight the bull or hang a red cape 130 00:09:52.320 --> 00:09:56.639 to their side. They're trained to make noise and moving aways that garner the 131 00:09:56.639 --> 00:10:00.240 bull's attention, and dash around the charging bull, which can't make turns easily 132 00:10:00.279 --> 00:10:03.159 as a bullfighter can It's entertaining in and of itself watching these bullfighters work, 133 00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:09.159 and sometimes it looks a little scary, but usually these guys are pretty on 134 00:10:09.320 --> 00:10:13.120 top of it. They can dash around really quick, jump on the side 135 00:10:13.159 --> 00:10:16.080 of of a fans. They can do all kinds of things, jumping a 136 00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:20.159 barrel like the clowns do. In addition to bullfighters. Speaking of clowns, 137 00:10:20.240 --> 00:10:24.519 the rodeo clown always kind of hangs out in a hollow barrel. It's very 138 00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:26.440 rare for a bull to charge and hit the barrels. It often thinks solid 139 00:10:26.519 --> 00:10:31.039 mass of wood. They can't be moved. I've seen rodeo clowns comically duck 140 00:10:31.080 --> 00:10:33.919 into a barrel as the bull comes at him, throw his hat out like 141 00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:37.320 he's offering into the bull in exchange for saving his life. Basically. Um. 142 00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:41.519 The rodeo clowns are arguably my personal favorite part of the rodeo. They 143 00:10:41.600 --> 00:10:46.080 keep the crowd entertained in between matches or events and are quick thinking as far 144 00:10:46.120 --> 00:10:50.360 as jokes. Sometimes they'll play catch with the football with the fans and the 145 00:10:50.440 --> 00:10:56.080 stands. Sometimes they'll white fans down in the field for some crazy competition. 146 00:10:56.960 --> 00:11:05.360 Um like uh at the Sheriff's Rodeo, they had a a what's it mullet? 147 00:11:05.440 --> 00:11:09.320 That's what I'm thinking of. They had a mullet competition and basically they 148 00:11:09.679 --> 00:11:13.279 you know, he said who's got the best mullet? And two guys came 149 00:11:13.320 --> 00:11:18.039 down, they were already path drunk, had him spin around and do a 150 00:11:18.159 --> 00:11:22.120 dance off, and they were just falling down. One guy took off his 151 00:11:22.200 --> 00:11:26.279 shirt and did a belly flop and it was just it was crazy. Um 152 00:11:26.519 --> 00:11:28.039 And obviously they got they got something cool out of that. But um. 153 00:11:30.480 --> 00:11:33.320 At another event, one of the rodeo clowns, they asked all the families 154 00:11:33.320 --> 00:11:35.720 to hold toddlers and babies with both hands out in front of them as he 155 00:11:35.799 --> 00:11:43.519 proceeded to play the opening theme to the Lion King. At another event, 156 00:11:43.720 --> 00:11:48.559 I remember, um, I remember we were we were waiting in between I 157 00:11:48.600 --> 00:11:54.279 think we're waiting for the bullfighting and uh it was they were switching events and 158 00:11:54.399 --> 00:11:58.600 all of a sudden, out of nowhere, a a a police cruiser just 159 00:12:00.039 --> 00:12:03.639 jumps out into the ring, starts racing around, lights and sirens going. 160 00:12:03.799 --> 00:12:09.519 It's it's like making turns and uh um, like it's on a dirt race 161 00:12:09.639 --> 00:12:13.759 track and the thing stops in the middle of the arena and we're all thinking, 162 00:12:13.840 --> 00:12:16.279 Okay, the sheriff's partly just put on a little show. But now 163 00:12:16.320 --> 00:12:20.399 it jumps out out jumps the rodeo clown and he's just you know, everyone's 164 00:12:20.480 --> 00:12:22.559 cheering and all of a sudden, you know it's part of the act. 165 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:26.480 But a deputy jumps out from over the stand, from over the fence, 166 00:12:26.840 --> 00:12:30.879 comes out. It's like, really, dude, really and basically proceeds to 167 00:12:30.960 --> 00:12:33.399 rest him and take him away, but of course he comes back for the 168 00:12:33.879 --> 00:12:37.840 bullfighting because it's just part of the act. But a little little function aigans 169 00:12:37.879 --> 00:12:41.159 like that make really add to the rodeo experience and it's really entertaining, funny 170 00:12:41.240 --> 00:12:46.799 to watch and uh and uh, quite a bit of fun. Um. 171 00:12:46.759 --> 00:12:50.120 It's probably my second favorite episode of King of the Hell to where Bobby becomes 172 00:12:50.159 --> 00:13:13.000 a rodeo clown. Lady, everyone, everyone avoid the nacho. Don't worry 173 00:13:13.120 --> 00:13:28.120 everybody, I'm fine. Not so following that seems better visualized and with sound, 174 00:13:28.200 --> 00:13:33.679 But basically Bobby has a hard time in the rodeo and so but when 175 00:13:33.720 --> 00:13:37.440 he sees the rodeo clowns, he instantly has insistantly light up and that's what 176 00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:39.080 he wants to do, and of course, uh, you know, Hank 177 00:13:39.120 --> 00:13:43.919 doesn't approve, and either does his friend Joseph, who tries to you know, 178 00:13:43.080 --> 00:13:48.240 kind of distance himself from him so he's not embarrassed that his friends are 179 00:13:48.320 --> 00:13:52.840 rodeo clown you know, with his new friends who are cowboys and bull riders 180 00:13:52.879 --> 00:13:56.799 and everything else. But in any case, Joseph ends up getting knocked off 181 00:13:56.879 --> 00:13:58.679 and hurt and you can't escape, and the bulls about to basically you know, 182 00:14:00.360 --> 00:14:03.080 slaughter him, and Bobby jumps out, you know, steal some old 183 00:14:03.159 --> 00:14:07.679 lady's hat and puts on some makeup from his mom's purse and goes out there 184 00:14:07.679 --> 00:14:11.679 and distracts the bowl and uh with the fire hydrant and jumps in a barrel 185 00:14:11.960 --> 00:14:16.679 and um um. Basically the bull hits it, which is what they typically 186 00:14:16.720 --> 00:14:20.559 don't do. But he hits the barrel and knocks him over, and he's 187 00:14:20.600 --> 00:14:24.200 like, I'm good and keeps the jokes coming. But in any case, 188 00:14:24.360 --> 00:14:28.080 uh, that that kind of scene just kind of proves the point that rodeo 189 00:14:28.120 --> 00:14:33.360 clowns and bullfighters are really important in rodeos. They really honestly, they probably 190 00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:39.159 honestly have saved cowboys lives for sure by distracting the bull and getting you know, 191 00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:43.919 letting the cowboy escape before he gets you know, run over and uh 192 00:14:43.799 --> 00:14:48.279 and providing some entertainment at the same time that wow, you know these guys 193 00:14:48.320 --> 00:14:52.120 will face off with this A bull is like, uh, like a solid 194 00:14:52.320 --> 00:14:58.039 muscle almost. It's uh, they're they're really fierce and uh intimidating. Um 195 00:14:58.799 --> 00:15:03.039 I any case, let's let's get out with the rodeo. Here a little 196 00:15:03.039 --> 00:15:07.279 bit more about it. Rodeo is a sport, complete with rules, a 197 00:15:07.399 --> 00:15:11.480 national organization, a couple of them actually fees, referees, announcers, and 198 00:15:11.600 --> 00:15:15.399 events. Going to a rodeo. It's not like going to a baseball or 199 00:15:15.440 --> 00:15:20.159 football game, though instead of paid salaries, rodeo participants earned based on their 200 00:15:20.200 --> 00:15:24.039 performance at each event. Some people go away with nothing but their entry fee. 201 00:15:24.399 --> 00:15:30.960 Others come away with thousands, potentially up to millions of dollars um. 202 00:15:31.360 --> 00:15:35.480 Uh. So some events pay better than others, obviously, and thus bigger 203 00:15:35.519 --> 00:15:39.440 events like the Sheriffs Rodeo tend to attract more people and wrote more rodeo participants. 204 00:15:41.320 --> 00:15:43.399 Everyone tends to dress up to some degree. Men in cowboy hats, 205 00:15:43.480 --> 00:15:48.279 women in daisy duke shorts, you know that kind of thing. Rodeos feel 206 00:15:48.320 --> 00:15:50.519 more like a community event of like minded people, like a little league or 207 00:15:50.519 --> 00:15:54.480 are youth soccer. That's one thing that makes it so cool. It feels 208 00:15:54.480 --> 00:15:58.480 like a community festival or fair, and in communities across the US, that 209 00:15:58.720 --> 00:16:03.159 is in fact what it is. If you go to any rodeos and so 210 00:16:03.360 --> 00:16:07.519 Cal, you know the one day in so Cal golden rule. Get here 211 00:16:07.600 --> 00:16:11.159 early, and by early I mean minimum two hours early. If you end 212 00:16:11.240 --> 00:16:15.440 up at the Sheriff Rodeo, I would say two to three hours early. 213 00:16:15.200 --> 00:16:21.519 Now you might show up three hours early. Look around empty stands. If 214 00:16:21.600 --> 00:16:26.200 I feel my advice is ridiculous, but claim your spot now and feel free 215 00:16:26.240 --> 00:16:29.720 to test me on this. On every event except maybe a Sunday, the 216 00:16:29.799 --> 00:16:33.600 stands will be packed. You will be sitting shoulder to shoulder with strangers in 217 00:16:33.679 --> 00:16:38.919 some cases. So I'd like to compare and contrast the three rodeo experiences I 218 00:16:38.960 --> 00:16:42.600 attended over the past month and a half, including this week's Sheriff Rodeo event. 219 00:16:42.879 --> 00:16:47.519 All of them were fun um and I had a blast at each. 220 00:16:48.279 --> 00:16:52.799 So let's start with the tatch Py Rodeo that the hatch of P Rodeo say 221 00:16:52.840 --> 00:16:56.440 that twenty times fast. To hatch a p Rodeo takes place a few times 222 00:16:56.480 --> 00:17:00.840 a year in the city at Hatchbe. To hatch A Pee is a beautiful 223 00:17:00.840 --> 00:17:06.160 mountain town in Current County in the mountains northwest of Lancaster and Palmdale. To 224 00:17:06.240 --> 00:17:08.880 Hatchb has radio grounds that are purpose built four of the rodeo. They remain 225 00:17:10.039 --> 00:17:14.079 all year long for rodeos and other events. There are plenty of other things 226 00:17:14.160 --> 00:17:17.440 that do attatched me too, but a lot of railway buffs make the trip 227 00:17:17.599 --> 00:17:21.759 to attached Me to witness that the hatchet P Loop a three thousand, seven 228 00:17:22.240 --> 00:17:27.440 vent actually three thousand, seven seventy nine ft helix that rises over itself on 229 00:17:27.480 --> 00:17:32.319 a two percent grade. Trains that make the journey through the TATCHB Loop and 230 00:17:32.400 --> 00:17:36.680 are at least three thousand, eight hundred feet long pass over themselves, and 231 00:17:36.759 --> 00:17:40.759 that's still something kind of cool to witness. The largest Hatchbe Rodeo event is 232 00:17:40.799 --> 00:17:44.799 the fourth of July fireworks show. After the rodeo festivities, a fireworks show 233 00:17:44.839 --> 00:17:49.440 follows. Last time I was here, the fireworks started several small brush fires 234 00:17:49.480 --> 00:17:53.279 around the stadium. But they must have learned their lesson in past years events, 235 00:17:53.400 --> 00:18:00.119 because each time I attended the Fourth of July fireworks Rodeo and show at 236 00:18:00.200 --> 00:18:03.680 datch P, an army of firefighters is already there on standby waiting for the 237 00:18:03.720 --> 00:18:10.279 fireworks, and you get both fireworks and a live firefighting demonstration if you go 238 00:18:10.359 --> 00:18:14.799 to this event to hatch a Pee. In contrast to uh California in general 239 00:18:15.039 --> 00:18:18.440 is a very conservative town and they pride themselves on the country lifestyle. Hatch 240 00:18:18.599 --> 00:18:22.039 We does not feel like California. You really do feel like you're in the 241 00:18:22.079 --> 00:18:27.079 Midwest, maybe Utah are Colorado. Perhaps the freeway like the Sheriff's Rodeo, 242 00:18:27.480 --> 00:18:32.720 runs alongside the event, and periodically truckers driving by will hank their horns for 243 00:18:32.799 --> 00:18:37.640 the giant American flag and probably memories of the rodeos in their own hometown that 244 00:18:37.680 --> 00:18:42.400 they're probably returning to. The Hesperia Rodeo now takes a place in September, 245 00:18:42.519 --> 00:18:47.000 and this year's rodeo took place about a week before the bigger Sheriff's Rodeo. 246 00:18:47.680 --> 00:18:51.799 Other three rodeos I attended, the Sparrio Rodeo is the smallest event. As 247 00:18:51.839 --> 00:18:55.400 such, it had the fewest participants, but the crowds still pack the stands. 248 00:18:55.960 --> 00:18:57.839 One unique thing about the Spara Rodeo, the Sheriff's and to hatch PI 249 00:18:59.000 --> 00:19:02.799 Rodeo is the stands fill up quick, but the fans are allowed to sit 250 00:19:02.839 --> 00:19:06.559 along the fence line and watch the rodeo, whereas at most of the other 251 00:19:06.640 --> 00:19:10.480 events they have to be seated in the stands and not anywhere near the walkway, 252 00:19:11.000 --> 00:19:14.279 and if you do, you'll be asked to go find a seat in 253 00:19:14.279 --> 00:19:18.119 the stands. Basically. Um. This was also where I saw mutton busting, 254 00:19:18.319 --> 00:19:22.640 which was the only place that get it of the three, but it's 255 00:19:22.640 --> 00:19:26.680 probably one of the more entertaining events out of radio. Uh. The Sheriff's 256 00:19:26.720 --> 00:19:30.079 Rodeo is the grand daddy of them all and it's hosted by the Sanridou County 257 00:19:30.119 --> 00:19:36.200 Sheriff's Department, which takes place into vor California every September. The Sheriffs Rodeo 258 00:19:36.279 --> 00:19:41.079 is a large event and features prc A Rodeo participant athletes participating for a large 259 00:19:41.119 --> 00:19:47.400 payout. I think this year's payout was somewhere around tent by the way prc 260 00:19:47.559 --> 00:19:52.400 A stunds for Professional Rodeo and Cowboys Association UM. The vendors around the Sheriffs 261 00:19:52.480 --> 00:19:56.039 Rodeo often make it feel like a small county fair as opposed to a well 262 00:19:56.079 --> 00:20:00.920 a rodeo. There's even some rides, including a mc uncle bowl, a 263 00:20:00.000 --> 00:20:04.759 bungee jump ride, lots of cowboy, Western or country. TheRoom stores sponsored 264 00:20:04.839 --> 00:20:10.440 vehicles on display, a children's player including petting zoo and animals on display. 265 00:20:10.920 --> 00:20:15.279 There's also a huge tent for an after rodeo party featuring country music and dance. 266 00:20:15.839 --> 00:20:18.720 This year, I didn't eat at the Sperry Art the hatch P rodeos, 267 00:20:18.960 --> 00:20:22.119 but I did grab some food at the Sheriff Rodeo. I wasn't that 268 00:20:22.319 --> 00:20:26.039 hungry, but I decided to take a walk around the concessionaires, UM see 269 00:20:26.160 --> 00:20:30.400 some of the shops, watch them the entertainment, and grab a bite to 270 00:20:30.400 --> 00:20:33.480 eat so that I wasn't hungry during the event. Because I didn't want to 271 00:20:33.519 --> 00:20:37.720 leave my seat and uh and miss something. UM, I found a Mexican 272 00:20:37.759 --> 00:20:41.279 food stand. After standing in line throughout twenty minutes, I noticed they didn't 273 00:20:41.319 --> 00:20:45.720 have a sign up with the selection of prices. This kind of uh intrigued 274 00:20:45.759 --> 00:20:48.640 me a little bit, so I stayed in line. Um, I saw 275 00:20:48.759 --> 00:20:52.680 some people ordered the nachos and they looked fantastic, So that's what I asked 276 00:20:52.720 --> 00:20:57.279 for. And I should have known better. I usually know better. Why 277 00:20:57.319 --> 00:21:00.920 I dropped my guard at the rodeos beyond me. But a plate of nachos, 278 00:21:02.559 --> 00:21:07.799 and I'm talking a regular standard uh cardboard plate came out to a whopping 279 00:21:07.000 --> 00:21:12.079 twenty five dollars excluding the police sign here. But what I'm really asking for 280 00:21:12.279 --> 00:21:15.559 is a tip. Even though all I did was slot nachos on a plate 281 00:21:15.640 --> 00:21:19.440 for you gimmick with tip, my nachos came out to about thirty dollars. 282 00:21:21.279 --> 00:21:22.359 Yes, I know I didn't have to pay the tip, but I often 283 00:21:22.440 --> 00:21:26.799 don't do anyways at these kind of events. Now, to be completely fair 284 00:21:26.960 --> 00:21:30.559 to this concession stand, these are the biggest play of nachos that I ever 285 00:21:30.640 --> 00:21:33.839 had in my life. There's not any way to make them go out any 286 00:21:33.920 --> 00:21:38.039 further, so they went up at least six inches tall. But still, 287 00:21:38.680 --> 00:21:41.519 I will make a solemn vow to you now that this will be the last 288 00:21:41.559 --> 00:21:45.799 time I pay ever pay plus five dollar tip for nachos. So help me 289 00:21:45.960 --> 00:21:49.599 God, I am not paying thirty bucks for nachos. I don't care how 290 00:21:49.680 --> 00:21:55.720 good they are. Nachos are not worth thirty dollars. Uh. Something else 291 00:21:55.759 --> 00:21:59.519 interesting I saw here at the Shehrieds Rodeo was a Starbucks. Of all the 292 00:21:59.599 --> 00:22:03.680 places us to see a Starbucks usually associate Starbucks with, I don't know Seattle 293 00:22:04.000 --> 00:22:10.920 or or urban Um, but I guess they've tapped out there caffeine addicts in 294 00:22:11.039 --> 00:22:15.599 the in the city because they're going after cowboy coffee drinkers. Now. Even 295 00:22:15.720 --> 00:22:18.920 the the employees were wearing, uh, their usual Starbucks uniform. Some of 296 00:22:18.960 --> 00:22:22.880 them had cowboy hats on, and they put some hay bales around. And 297 00:22:23.279 --> 00:22:26.839 somebody must have had a meeting up and up in Seattle someone and said, 298 00:22:26.880 --> 00:22:32.559 how can we increase profits because we've built a Starbucks on every block in in 299 00:22:33.759 --> 00:22:37.480 in every major city. Um, we're gonna have to expand out to um, 300 00:22:38.400 --> 00:22:42.559 Taylor's Ville, Wyoming or something. Now, Um, listen those Taylor's 301 00:22:42.599 --> 00:22:47.559 Yella Wyomings there, how about Cody, Wyoming? Um? Anyways, Uh, 302 00:22:48.079 --> 00:22:51.319 I just looked it didn't look out a place. It looked like Yeah, 303 00:22:51.480 --> 00:22:55.720 I guess I could see coffee like Starbucks at rodeos now, But um, 304 00:22:56.720 --> 00:22:59.839 I guess they're just trying something new, but it did seem kind of 305 00:23:00.359 --> 00:23:03.240 that. Usually, you know, when I go into a Starbucks, usually 306 00:23:03.240 --> 00:23:10.880 it's it's almost like, um, like an urban theme, modern cosmopolitan maybe 307 00:23:11.000 --> 00:23:15.440 sometimes uh and and the people behind the desk no offense to them at all, 308 00:23:15.480 --> 00:23:19.680 are usually like like, yeah, I could see you at a at 309 00:23:19.720 --> 00:23:27.039 a animal rights protesters and uh and uh no, No, these guys were 310 00:23:27.319 --> 00:23:30.960 here for the rodeo and I think after because as soon as the roady events 311 00:23:30.960 --> 00:23:33.960 started, they closed down the event and they came and watch the show. 312 00:23:33.079 --> 00:23:40.640 So that was kind of cool. I guess, Um, so kids, 313 00:23:41.400 --> 00:23:44.359 most kids I know, we'll have fun here at the rodeo. They love 314 00:23:44.440 --> 00:23:47.880 the animals, they love dressing up, they love the good old fashioned country 315 00:23:47.920 --> 00:23:51.279 style food, and they love all the activities that are available to them, 316 00:23:51.359 --> 00:23:56.920 particularly at the Sheriff Rodeo. Um it's also fun obviously for them to participate 317 00:23:56.000 --> 00:24:00.880 if they can, like in mutton busting. So uh. All three of 318 00:24:00.920 --> 00:24:04.240 these radios had significant law enforce and presents as far as safety is secure to 319 00:24:04.319 --> 00:24:10.240 goes. There was no metal detectors. Something I do now is I bring 320 00:24:10.559 --> 00:24:15.240 uh, I bring my Zoom voice recorder which has enough metal into it, 321 00:24:15.279 --> 00:24:18.200 and I keep it in my pocket and don't take it out when I go 322 00:24:18.319 --> 00:24:21.960 through a metal detector. And this is the test the metal detector to see 323 00:24:22.039 --> 00:24:23.880 if it's gonna go off, and if it even if it does go off, 324 00:24:23.920 --> 00:24:27.440 I'm gonna be inspected because, as I've told you in previous podcasts, 325 00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:32.559 most of the time that doesn't happen. Um. The last place I tested 326 00:24:32.599 --> 00:24:37.680 this that was um Staples Center which is now Crypto Arena in downtown l A. 327 00:24:37.160 --> 00:24:42.640 When I went and watched the Monster Jam Monster Trucks, UM, it 328 00:24:42.759 --> 00:24:45.720 went off and they actually checked me. So I was like, Okay, 329 00:24:45.759 --> 00:24:48.839 you guys are on it good as you should be. UM. By the 330 00:24:48.880 --> 00:24:51.240 way, I was gonna put that side note, I was gonna put that 331 00:24:51.319 --> 00:24:53.599 as a episode of this podcast, but I left halfway through because, to 332 00:24:53.680 --> 00:24:59.880 be quite frank, I was bored. So, UM, if you're gonna 333 00:24:59.880 --> 00:25:02.960 do monster trucks, you have to do that like in a huge football stadium 334 00:25:03.039 --> 00:25:06.200 or something. You can't do that in a small basketball arena. It just 335 00:25:06.440 --> 00:25:10.319 doesn't work. UM. But any case, I did leave early, and 336 00:25:10.400 --> 00:25:11.799 so I did decide not to do an episode on that. Maybe in the 337 00:25:11.839 --> 00:25:15.119 future, maybe had a bigger event. Um. But any case, back 338 00:25:15.160 --> 00:25:18.279 on track here. All three of these rodeo events have significant law enforce and 339 00:25:18.319 --> 00:25:22.920 presidents as security that the hatch P rodeo had Kerrent County Sheriff's deputies, the 340 00:25:23.039 --> 00:25:29.160 Spario rodeo had Hesperia Park Rangers who are law enforcement monsters, and the Sheriff's 341 00:25:29.200 --> 00:25:33.440 rodeo had, of course Sambridio County s Sheriff's deputies on patrol, both in 342 00:25:33.440 --> 00:25:37.920 the parking lots and in the event itself. That said, I have seen 343 00:25:37.079 --> 00:25:41.039 minor issues take place. This includes arrests. At one rodeo, I saw 344 00:25:41.119 --> 00:25:45.039 either a father or stepfather getting a fight with his teenage son. I signal 345 00:25:45.200 --> 00:25:49.599 some deputies to come over, and they instantly ran over in handlets situation. 346 00:25:51.079 --> 00:25:53.119 Unfortunately, nobody had to go to jail in this instance, um, but 347 00:25:53.319 --> 00:25:57.119 they separated the two for a while. At another I saw a father get 348 00:25:57.240 --> 00:26:00.400 arrested and I didn't inquire us to the nature of the arrest, but his 349 00:26:00.519 --> 00:26:03.960 young son seemed okay. Nonetheless, he was driven off in an ambulance. 350 00:26:04.039 --> 00:26:07.519 The kid was much to his horror, and it was kind of sad to 351 00:26:07.559 --> 00:26:11.839 watch because the deputy that had to make the arrest. Again, I don't 352 00:26:11.880 --> 00:26:15.680 know what it was for, possibly some kind of child abuse or endangement. 353 00:26:15.960 --> 00:26:22.720 Maybe, um, because I didn't win as the crime itself, but um, 354 00:26:23.359 --> 00:26:27.839 basically, the father was sitting there kind of like pleading and with with 355 00:26:29.000 --> 00:26:32.759 deputy and you know, trying to negotiate with him, and they called an 356 00:26:32.799 --> 00:26:34.200 ambulance. The kid got checked out, and once the kid saw his father 357 00:26:34.240 --> 00:26:37.920 get arrested and that, you know, he was being forced into an ambulance 358 00:26:37.960 --> 00:26:40.640 to be taken to the hospital, you know, he just flipped out sort 359 00:26:40.640 --> 00:26:42.599 of crying, being scared, and you know, it was really it sucked 360 00:26:42.599 --> 00:26:47.519 to see because you know, literally two minutes ago, the deputy was was 361 00:26:47.640 --> 00:26:52.079 out there, you know, participating as with the rodeo clown and doing different 362 00:26:52.160 --> 00:26:55.319 things. And now two minutes later he's over here having to do his job. 363 00:26:56.279 --> 00:26:59.440 And then even even after the arrest happened and they took him to you 364 00:26:59.440 --> 00:27:03.480 know, probably Valley and attention center and everything else, the you know, 365 00:27:03.519 --> 00:27:04.880 people remember seeing him out in the stands, They're like, yeah, it 366 00:27:04.960 --> 00:27:07.000 was a good job, and he had to he had to put on that 367 00:27:07.079 --> 00:27:10.759 brave face again, like yeah, that was cool, wasn't it. You 368 00:27:10.799 --> 00:27:12.720 know, fist bump and and pretend like he didn't just you know, witness 369 00:27:12.799 --> 00:27:17.519 a sad event just take place. Um, and that's what you're gonna get 370 00:27:17.559 --> 00:27:21.519 a lot of cops, you know, they they see some horrible things and 371 00:27:21.640 --> 00:27:23.880 it does change you to some degree or another. Uh. Most cops I 372 00:27:25.000 --> 00:27:27.119 know, for example, will not sit with their back to a door. 373 00:27:27.640 --> 00:27:30.519 They always want to be facing and that goes you know, that goes with 374 00:27:30.559 --> 00:27:33.920 me too, even though I don't do the job anymore, at least not 375 00:27:33.079 --> 00:27:38.279 right now. Um, I go to a restaurant, I gotta have my 376 00:27:38.359 --> 00:27:44.359 back to the wall and I gotta be facing, um where people are coming 377 00:27:44.400 --> 00:27:45.799 in. I gotta see who's coming in. And it's just it's one of 378 00:27:45.839 --> 00:27:49.079 those things. Um. You know, they just gotta get drilled into you, 379 00:27:49.200 --> 00:27:52.759 especially if you've ever worked any kind of gel or prison setting. Um, 380 00:27:52.839 --> 00:27:56.680 you know you never turned it back on people like that. But anyways, 381 00:27:56.680 --> 00:28:00.440 I'm getting off subject, as always, always injecting a little on enforcement 382 00:28:00.519 --> 00:28:04.400 a storian. But um, these things do happen at rodeos. But rodeos 383 00:28:04.400 --> 00:28:10.279 are generally very safe and attended by very respectful, often very conservative people. 384 00:28:10.880 --> 00:28:14.279 While working for the Samarkanda s Sheriffs Department as a custody specialist back in the 385 00:28:14.400 --> 00:28:17.960 day, we would also be warned about vins at Glenn Helen at the base 386 00:28:18.039 --> 00:28:22.720 of the Cone Pass. This area features a lot of different concerts, races, 387 00:28:22.839 --> 00:28:26.839 and even electronic music festivals. Whenever the rodeo occurred, extra staff was 388 00:28:27.119 --> 00:28:30.839 never utilized at the jail. Stereotypes being what they are, we knew the 389 00:28:30.960 --> 00:28:37.200 rodeo as a family event and that most people UM. The most amount of 390 00:28:37.240 --> 00:28:40.640 people I've seen arrested out a rodeo, usually for a mind and charge like 391 00:28:40.680 --> 00:28:44.440 being able to care for oneself because they were drunk or some other other kind 392 00:28:44.480 --> 00:28:48.599 of disorderly conduct, was maybe one person per event, maybe sometimes zero. 393 00:28:49.880 --> 00:28:56.079 But during Beyond Wonderland, a psychedelic electronic dance festival, we absolutely would have 394 00:28:56.279 --> 00:29:03.200 to staff the jail to max capac to be During one event, we once 395 00:29:03.240 --> 00:29:07.160 booked over four d and fifty people total, about a hundred and fifty of 396 00:29:07.240 --> 00:29:11.720 them being from this ridiculous electronic dance festival UM, and they were arrested for 397 00:29:11.920 --> 00:29:18.480 everything from trespassing to breaking in without tickets UM, to fighting deputies to possessing 398 00:29:18.559 --> 00:29:23.039 a possession of a controlled substance or drug dealing, to just about to just 399 00:29:23.200 --> 00:29:27.519 being an absolute a hole or B word. Um, Okay, that's not 400 00:29:27.640 --> 00:29:32.119 a lot, but you get my point. Usually that occurred after the arrest. 401 00:29:32.319 --> 00:29:37.640 But I still have my share of commendation letter stating how common and um, 402 00:29:38.039 --> 00:29:41.440 how calm I was and composed compared to my stressed out colleagues at West 403 00:29:41.480 --> 00:29:47.599 Valley Attention Center freaking out over vanload after van load of eighteen year old screaming 404 00:29:48.200 --> 00:29:52.960 and fighting and being dragged into the gel and crying and coming off their drug 405 00:29:52.119 --> 00:29:56.279 high and constitution this and at the police of that and blah blah blah, 406 00:29:56.319 --> 00:30:00.359 and and my co workers are just stressed out, like, oh my god, 407 00:30:00.400 --> 00:30:03.400 I cannot book them one more person. They've already done like fifty And 408 00:30:03.440 --> 00:30:06.319 I'm just like, yeah, hey, we're twenty for our facility. These 409 00:30:06.359 --> 00:30:10.240 people will get booked one way or the other, um, you know, 410 00:30:11.000 --> 00:30:14.519 and uh, we'll be fine. That's what I would always tell them. 411 00:30:14.559 --> 00:30:17.920 We're a twenty four hour facility. Um, you're going home in eight hours, 412 00:30:18.200 --> 00:30:22.119 so chill out. Um. But anyways, let me tell you something 413 00:30:22.119 --> 00:30:27.279 else about jail. I have looked into the eyes of evil psychopathic murderers booking 414 00:30:27.319 --> 00:30:30.799 them into jail. And I have booked people off the street for drunken public. 415 00:30:32.400 --> 00:30:34.880 Do you know which type of a restaurant always wants to fight and talk 416 00:30:36.400 --> 00:30:41.559 crap and uh, just to otherwise be a garbage human being? If you 417 00:30:41.599 --> 00:30:45.119 guess the Mr. Drunken public, you're right. In fact, most of 418 00:30:45.160 --> 00:30:48.440 the murderers I booked were respectful and well mannered. But you get some guy 419 00:30:48.519 --> 00:30:52.599 that doesn't think he should be there just because he was lying on the sidewalk 420 00:30:52.640 --> 00:30:56.359 in a poll of the zone urine and feces, and holy hell, you 421 00:30:56.480 --> 00:31:00.480 have a fight on your hands for sure. Um, this would happen almost 422 00:31:00.519 --> 00:31:04.799 every time too, especially with this uh, this crowd of kids that were 423 00:31:04.839 --> 00:31:12.559 coming in from from the Wonderland event. Um, that's what these kids were. 424 00:31:12.599 --> 00:31:17.079 They were too young to understand there was consequences to their actions, too 425 00:31:17.160 --> 00:31:21.200 young to realize they were adultson and gel and shoving a deputy isn't going to 426 00:31:21.279 --> 00:31:25.400 get you any uh, you know, out the door any faster. In 427 00:31:25.480 --> 00:31:27.039 fact, it might get you into an ambulance and straight to the hospital. 428 00:31:27.759 --> 00:31:32.519 Or a female crying on the female side of holding after dealing drugs isn't gonna 429 00:31:32.559 --> 00:31:36.000 garner any sympathy from a female deputy that once had to do CPR in Vain 430 00:31:36.079 --> 00:31:41.400 on a sixteen year old that didn't make it after unknowingly ingesting fentinyl um. 431 00:31:41.559 --> 00:31:44.160 Sometimes these kids would come up and I'd be like, Okay, you know, 432 00:31:44.279 --> 00:31:47.240 here we go. You're gonna get three phone calls. We're gonna release 433 00:31:47.319 --> 00:31:48.480 you in a couple of hours. You know, you can make a phone 434 00:31:48.519 --> 00:31:52.480 call your parents or whatever, because I'm sure you're still living at home. 435 00:31:52.279 --> 00:31:57.920 Just sign here. And they wouldn't what the what what that what would be 436 00:31:59.160 --> 00:32:01.839 is a citation for their crime, and they would refuse to sign it. 437 00:32:02.640 --> 00:32:07.480 You know, they get some I'm not signing out without my lawyer or my 438 00:32:07.640 --> 00:32:13.480 parents or blah blah blah. And it's Friday night and it's a holiday weekend 439 00:32:14.319 --> 00:32:15.960 and I'm trying to I'm literally trying to help this kid out. Look. 440 00:32:16.039 --> 00:32:20.519 Look, if you don't sign this, you're going to get booked into jail, 441 00:32:21.039 --> 00:32:24.720 and you're gonna stay here until Tuesday at at the earliest, because all 442 00:32:24.799 --> 00:32:28.480 this is is a promise that you'll show up to court six months or so. 443 00:32:29.480 --> 00:32:32.319 Um. But if you don't sign this, you're going to jail with 444 00:32:32.559 --> 00:32:37.599 with the real criminals and you're not getting out for days. And there's nothing 445 00:32:37.640 --> 00:32:43.440 I can do until you sign this, um, because if you don't sign 446 00:32:43.519 --> 00:32:45.559 it, I have to get I have to present you to a magistrate and 447 00:32:45.640 --> 00:32:49.799 that's the only options here. And you know, I you fter this. 448 00:32:50.000 --> 00:32:54.279 I shouldn't even be here at the police and I'm not signing ship Okay, 449 00:32:54.319 --> 00:32:58.599 okay, okay, okay, and uh all right, cool, yeah, 450 00:32:58.720 --> 00:33:02.119 go back to holding welcome. Um. You know, if you ever get 451 00:33:02.200 --> 00:33:05.519 arrested and they have you say, hey, signed this to get released, 452 00:33:06.079 --> 00:33:09.160 and it's just it's just a stupid citation signing. It doesn't mean you're guilty. 453 00:33:09.640 --> 00:33:13.880 Same thing with the traffic stop you get pulled over, UM, signed 454 00:33:13.920 --> 00:33:16.519 the stupid ticket. It's not saying the cops right and you're wrong, or 455 00:33:16.680 --> 00:33:21.119 that you're guilty. All it is saying is you promised to show up to 456 00:33:21.200 --> 00:33:23.200 court or take care of the tickets somehow. You know, that's what we 457 00:33:23.319 --> 00:33:27.920 have the judicial system for. Um. Wow, I really got off topic, 458 00:33:27.920 --> 00:33:30.759 because usually don't. Anyways, it's a theme here on this podcast going 459 00:33:30.799 --> 00:33:35.519 off topic. But let's get back to the rodeo. Now. I know 460 00:33:35.680 --> 00:33:37.839 there are more than a few people out there that immediately saw the title of 461 00:33:37.880 --> 00:33:44.880 this week's podcast and uh, probably moved on. Rodeos are touchy subjects to 462 00:33:44.920 --> 00:33:47.200 both sides, but one I can't ignore since we're talking about the sport of 463 00:33:47.319 --> 00:33:52.839 rodeo, and I've gotten into debates with friends, made pointless back and forth 464 00:33:52.920 --> 00:33:57.519 posts over social media, and basically did my own college level research paper through 465 00:33:57.559 --> 00:34:01.480 the production of this episode of the podcast to research rodeos. I've heard both 466 00:34:01.519 --> 00:34:06.279 sides of the argument, evaluated the evidence, and came to my own conclusions. 467 00:34:07.079 --> 00:34:10.760 All that said, I don't want to waddle into politics and open fierce 468 00:34:10.800 --> 00:34:15.400 debates of rodeo's here. You decide for yourself if you want to try something 469 00:34:15.440 --> 00:34:19.639 new, if you want to see what the fuss is all about in the 470 00:34:19.679 --> 00:34:24.159 Midwest, you know the flyover States. Take my advice, UM, on 471 00:34:24.719 --> 00:34:28.760 attending a rodeo, give it a try. If you are a member of 472 00:34:28.840 --> 00:34:32.840 PETA and you don't believe that rodeo animals should be forced to perform, and 473 00:34:34.239 --> 00:34:36.519 uh, you know you've been vegan since you or two and a half, 474 00:34:37.320 --> 00:34:40.960 um, then don't go. Just don't don't support it if it's not what 475 00:34:42.039 --> 00:34:45.159 you support UM when researching animal welfare and safety, I knew I could go 476 00:34:45.360 --> 00:34:49.840 straight to the main contenders. I'm sorry, excuse me, I knew I 477 00:34:49.920 --> 00:34:53.800 couldn't go straight to the main contenders. Professional rodeo organizations obviously have an interest 478 00:34:53.880 --> 00:34:58.840 in the sport to make money, and organizations like the People for Ethical Treatment 479 00:34:58.840 --> 00:35:04.440 of Animals or any other are kind of animal wheyfare welfare group have similar political 480 00:35:04.519 --> 00:35:10.360 interest through donation revenue in opposing rodeos. It's getting harder and harder to sit 481 00:35:10.400 --> 00:35:15.039 through the propaganda nonsense and find what the truth is, isn't it No matter 482 00:35:15.199 --> 00:35:17.440 what the subject is, you are trying to research, and that's all I 483 00:35:17.519 --> 00:35:22.239 want. I just want the truth. UM. You could type in it's 484 00:35:22.280 --> 00:35:25.760 a sky blue and you'll find some ridiculous political argument on both sides on why 485 00:35:25.840 --> 00:35:30.679 it's Trump's fault or why Bill Clinton, you know, made more pollution to 486 00:35:31.519 --> 00:35:35.119 it'll just go on and on. Literally, I mean, I saw a 487 00:35:35.119 --> 00:35:38.760 funny post on Facebook where people will argue about anything to show you prove. 488 00:35:38.840 --> 00:35:43.559 Here's a picture of a rock and someone's like it's a stone. It's like, 489 00:35:45.000 --> 00:35:47.320 I mean, it's just it's ridiculous today, right, we just can't 490 00:35:47.320 --> 00:35:54.920 agree on anything, and that includes rodeos um. So first and foremost, 491 00:35:54.960 --> 00:35:58.760 I want to say I am one of the biggest animal lovers you will ever 492 00:35:58.840 --> 00:36:04.480 meet. And I'm a big alimal rights defender as well, whether you believe 493 00:36:04.519 --> 00:36:07.679 me or not. When I get charity shamed at the cash register at my 494 00:36:07.719 --> 00:36:12.159 grocery store like Randy Marsh and Whole Foods, I tend to say no if 495 00:36:12.199 --> 00:36:15.280 I don't know enough about the charity, which is almost in every situation. 496 00:36:15.360 --> 00:36:17.639 If you haven't seen that little scene with Randy Marsh by the way, let 497 00:36:17.679 --> 00:36:22.159 me give you a quick clip. Okay, sir, it looks like you're 498 00:36:22.159 --> 00:36:27.960 totally all right. Okay, and would you like to add a dollar donation 499 00:36:28.039 --> 00:36:30.599 to help hungry kids around the world. Oh no, no, it's okay. 500 00:36:31.000 --> 00:36:34.840 Sorry, I'm good. I'm sorry. You don't want to give the 501 00:36:34.880 --> 00:36:37.400 dollar to hungry kids? Not today? Thank you? Okay, no problem. 502 00:36:38.239 --> 00:36:40.559 Window is gonna come up and ask if you're helping the hungry kids. 503 00:36:40.639 --> 00:36:45.880 Just hit no, I'm not. Oh, come on, try hitting it 504 00:36:45.920 --> 00:36:47.480 again. It's the bucks below, the one that says sure, I'd love 505 00:36:47.519 --> 00:36:51.000 to help. However I can look, I give money to charity A lot. 506 00:36:51.079 --> 00:36:53.039 Okay, sure you do, I do. I just don't want to 507 00:36:53.159 --> 00:36:57.639 every time I shot for food. That's completely understandable if you can just speak 508 00:36:57.639 --> 00:37:00.679 into the voice decoder and say, I'm not giving anything to the hungry kids. 509 00:37:02.239 --> 00:37:07.480 I'm not giving anything to the hungry kids. So with the ice cream, 510 00:37:07.519 --> 00:37:10.159 the vodka, pizza pockets, and nothing for hungry kids, that's three. 511 00:37:15.599 --> 00:37:17.920 Oh I'm sorry, Oh no, my my fault. Isn't it great 512 00:37:19.039 --> 00:37:21.760 having a Whole Foods? This is where I come for lunch every day. 513 00:37:22.280 --> 00:37:29.360 Gotta eat healthy to stay fit? Oh shit, it's that kind. And 514 00:37:29.519 --> 00:37:32.199 how are you today? The great Listen before you ring me up, I 515 00:37:32.280 --> 00:37:35.559 just want to let you know I'm not going to be giving extra money to 516 00:37:35.639 --> 00:37:37.599 charity. So can we just skip that part? Oh, no problem, 517 00:37:37.679 --> 00:37:40.119 sir. They've updated the system so it's a lot more streamline. Now. 518 00:37:40.400 --> 00:37:43.559 Okay, there's a picture of a little hungry boy. Will you just press 519 00:37:43.639 --> 00:37:49.480 on his belly? Okay, that's got it. So with the no help 520 00:37:49.559 --> 00:37:52.760 for hungry kids, that's eight seven. Your changes right there. Just pull 521 00:37:52.840 --> 00:37:55.719 the sandwich out of the little girl's mouth. This is not streamlined, it's 522 00:37:55.760 --> 00:38:01.159 just the new change dispenser, Sir, I can't. Yeah, he's a 523 00:38:01.199 --> 00:38:06.679 hungry one. You gotta pull hard. Sandwich isn't coming out. Try putting 524 00:38:06.679 --> 00:38:15.239 your foot on her face. I have a nice day there, I was 525 00:38:15.360 --> 00:38:24.639 having a nice day. Find everything you need it today? Yes, okay, 526 00:38:24.760 --> 00:38:29.400 looks like your total comes to Would you like to give a dollar to 527 00:38:29.440 --> 00:38:31.239 help feed hungry kids? Yes, I would like to give a dollar. 528 00:38:31.599 --> 00:38:36.360 You want to give a dollar? Yes I will. Oh wow, okay, 529 00:38:36.719 --> 00:38:39.280 So that's ten dollars for the beer and chocolate covered peanuts, twenty six 530 00:38:39.320 --> 00:38:43.920 dollars in filet mignons, and one dollar for hungry kids around the world. 531 00:38:44.119 --> 00:38:45.719 On amount of donation, it will say ten dollars, twenty dollars, or 532 00:38:45.800 --> 00:38:52.400 fifty dollars. Can you just press the one dollar box? Attention shopper, 533 00:38:52.559 --> 00:38:55.719 somebody just joined the one dollar club, giving one whole dollar to help feed 534 00:38:55.800 --> 00:39:01.800 hungry children. Here's your T shirt. Oh won't the kids be thrilled when 535 00:39:01.840 --> 00:39:06.800 they get their piece of that big impressive dollar. For he's a jolly good 536 00:39:06.840 --> 00:39:09.480 fellow. For he's a jolly good fellow. For he's a jolly good fellow. 537 00:39:10.599 --> 00:39:21.960 He ended world hunger. Umzy grace. How sweet? This is a 538 00:39:22.039 --> 00:39:25.400 place where hope is scarce. These people are hungry. Little Jojo here might 539 00:39:25.440 --> 00:39:29.920 not eat today. What does that mean it's okay for cashier's to ask us 540 00:39:29.960 --> 00:39:32.760 for money while we're in the checkoutline. It isn't right and it isn't fair. 541 00:39:34.760 --> 00:39:37.159 Just two dollars a day adds up to sixty two goddamn dollars a month 542 00:39:37.159 --> 00:39:39.960 if you go to Whole Foods as much as I do. Nobody should have 543 00:39:40.000 --> 00:39:44.800 to feel the shame the humiliation of being asked to add money under their grocery 544 00:39:44.840 --> 00:39:47.920 bill. Help. Now, let's make grocery stores a safe space for all 545 00:39:49.559 --> 00:39:58.440 together. We can make a difference, because charity shaming hurts everyone. Okay, 546 00:39:58.519 --> 00:40:04.559 So back to UH animal Welfare and Safety. UM. So, as 547 00:40:04.599 --> 00:40:07.719 far as charity shaming, when I go to Petco, I do not even 548 00:40:07.760 --> 00:40:12.320 have to be asked to donate, I just do. I always hit that 549 00:40:12.400 --> 00:40:15.440 button the same girl as Pets Smart. In fact, pet Smart charity is 550 00:40:15.519 --> 00:40:20.880 one of the best in my opinion animal UH run charities. Ever, UM 551 00:40:22.199 --> 00:40:24.239 I think a d percent of the profits there go to animals. UM. 552 00:40:25.840 --> 00:40:29.280 But in any case, I buy a ton of stuff on Amazon, and 553 00:40:29.400 --> 00:40:32.360 all of my Amazon Smile purchases benefit the Sanridino Humane Society, all of it. 554 00:40:34.800 --> 00:40:38.000 Um. I spent over an hour after last week's episode, episode eleven 555 00:40:38.039 --> 00:40:44.039 at the Swan Lake after the California Theater event in San Ardno, um, 556 00:40:44.159 --> 00:40:46.280 after the bell At, trying to get a kitten that I saw near my 557 00:40:46.360 --> 00:40:50.280 car to trust me so I could catch it, take it home and try 558 00:40:50.320 --> 00:40:53.239 to save it from an otherwise terrible fate of living on the streets in Samardino. 559 00:40:54.280 --> 00:40:58.280 I unfortunately did not achieve my goal, and it was kind of depressed 560 00:40:58.320 --> 00:41:02.639 on my way home because of it. Um. But just just just a 561 00:41:02.920 --> 00:41:06.840 level with you, I wouldn't so much as give a homeless vagrant five cents 562 00:41:06.840 --> 00:41:10.480 out of my heart earned money because through my experience and reality, whether you 563 00:41:10.559 --> 00:41:14.880 want to face it or not, it will not help them and most always, 564 00:41:15.360 --> 00:41:19.760 almost always contributes to drugs and other steps. It's abuse, whether it 565 00:41:19.880 --> 00:41:23.400 be alcohol or you know, or so any kind of kind of self medicating 566 00:41:23.519 --> 00:41:28.559 items out there. Um. You know, donate to a if you're gonna 567 00:41:28.599 --> 00:41:31.400 donate to the homeless, dontate to a reputable charity. Don't just give it 568 00:41:31.519 --> 00:41:37.320 to them. It's not gonna help them. Um. So all that said, 569 00:41:37.519 --> 00:41:39.679 I would not, I would never tolerate abuse of animals, and that 570 00:41:39.760 --> 00:41:45.039 includes the rodeo. I have no I have no interest in the rodeo as 571 00:41:45.079 --> 00:41:49.760 far as defending it just because I like to attend it every once in a 572 00:41:49.840 --> 00:41:53.000 gray while. Um, if I found concrete proof today that at rodeo I 573 00:41:53.119 --> 00:41:59.519 attended abused animals, I would absolutely not go back. Not only would I 574 00:41:59.559 --> 00:42:02.440 not go act, I would certainly be out there protesting with with the animal 575 00:42:02.599 --> 00:42:07.599 rights folks. I would, um because I do. I love animals, 576 00:42:07.880 --> 00:42:14.079 that includes all animals. UM. So that's a that's a long winded way 577 00:42:14.079 --> 00:42:16.760 of me getting to the point that rodeos, in my ever so humble opinion, 578 00:42:17.480 --> 00:42:22.639 do not harm animals. I've been to more than a few rodeos now, 579 00:42:22.719 --> 00:42:24.960 and the only thing I've seen hurt was the occasional cowboy that sprained his 580 00:42:25.079 --> 00:42:30.480 leg or had a reality check on his pride. The second time I came 581 00:42:30.519 --> 00:42:34.760 to the Sheriff's rodeo, there was a line of animal welfare protesters on both 582 00:42:34.800 --> 00:42:37.440 sides of the entrance. He had to walk between two lines of these protesters 583 00:42:37.480 --> 00:42:40.760 to get to the entrance to the sheriff rodeo. Last year, they are 584 00:42:40.800 --> 00:42:44.360 in a public park, and have every right to protest, and the Sheriff's 585 00:42:44.400 --> 00:42:47.159 department allowed that, of course. Um, all they did was stand by 586 00:42:47.199 --> 00:42:51.760 and let them exercise their First Amendment right as long as they do so peacefully, 587 00:42:52.360 --> 00:42:53.880 and they were there ready to step in if anything gets out of hand 588 00:42:53.920 --> 00:43:00.880 from either side. Now, I'm not gonna sit here and say that rodeo 589 00:43:00.920 --> 00:43:05.400 animals, specifically the cows and bucking horses are just out there having the times 590 00:43:05.440 --> 00:43:08.199 of their life. I've heard that too from the other side, and there's 591 00:43:08.239 --> 00:43:12.599 no doubt it's not fun and even a little stressful for the animals in some 592 00:43:12.719 --> 00:43:20.079 ways. UM. So that's garbage obviously, But these animals are not being 593 00:43:20.159 --> 00:43:23.440 hurt, and nobody has given me any concrete proof, nor have I seen 594 00:43:23.519 --> 00:43:30.119 any animal cruelty actually take place. Um. Has it happened before, sure, 595 00:43:30.519 --> 00:43:35.639 absolutely, but that goes with anything. Accidents do happen, and you 596 00:43:35.719 --> 00:43:39.360 know historic events of rodeos way back in the day did have animal abuse and 597 00:43:39.440 --> 00:43:45.599 things like that. Um, But things are different largely now outside from the 598 00:43:45.679 --> 00:43:50.480 fact the animals are uncomfortable and low stressed out. Um, they're not being 599 00:43:50.559 --> 00:43:54.480 hurt. As soon as the cowboys just falls off that you know, the 600 00:43:54.599 --> 00:43:59.440 horse and nearly breaks his leg and limps over to the wall. You know, 601 00:43:59.519 --> 00:44:02.960 the horses running around like the hell is that? Um? The only 602 00:44:04.000 --> 00:44:09.400 people I've seen hurt were cowboys. So that's about as far as I'll get 603 00:44:09.440 --> 00:44:13.639 on that. The only thing less I'm gonna do here is UH presents you 604 00:44:13.840 --> 00:44:19.119 seven UH in my research, seven of the top rodio myths that I found 605 00:44:20.239 --> 00:44:23.000 to be untrue, and from there all that you decide whether rodeo is for 606 00:44:23.119 --> 00:44:28.880 you or not. So myth one rodeo animals are beaten and mistreated to make 607 00:44:28.920 --> 00:44:35.039 them bucking kick false. Animals have always been bred to encourage qualities. This 608 00:44:35.159 --> 00:44:38.159 is why you can pet a husky but should steer clearable wolf Bronch horses, 609 00:44:38.239 --> 00:44:43.000 together with bulls, are regarded as athletes in the sport of rodeo. They 610 00:44:43.039 --> 00:44:45.360 are bread and prize for their aggression, their wild natures, and training to 611 00:44:45.480 --> 00:44:49.960 not allow anyone to ride them. The animals are proud and healthy, and 612 00:44:50.000 --> 00:44:54.280 their behavior is radically different from any animal that's abused or unhappy. The owner 613 00:44:54.320 --> 00:45:00.000 investment is significant and top veterinary and tradutritional cares and necessity. It's nobody's interest 614 00:45:00.039 --> 00:45:04.920 to hurt these animals writers are merit riders. Meanwhile, the horses and bulls 615 00:45:05.000 --> 00:45:08.119 is athletes to be respected. It's they, not the animals most at risk 616 00:45:08.159 --> 00:45:13.320 from the competition. Struct regulations ensure animals are not beating our arms with steep 617 00:45:13.360 --> 00:45:16.239 fines and expulsion from the competition awaiting any transgressors. By the way, I 618 00:45:16.280 --> 00:45:22.000 didn't pull this the seven miss from any rodeo organization. I didn't pull these 619 00:45:22.079 --> 00:45:29.320 facts from obviously any animal welfare welfare organization either. Um. Myth two radio 620 00:45:29.360 --> 00:45:32.119 animals are strapped tightly by their testicles. This is the one I've heard over 621 00:45:32.280 --> 00:45:36.400 and over and over again, and the one that concerned me most when I 622 00:45:36.519 --> 00:45:40.360 first heard it. Um. But through research, I've determined that's just not 623 00:45:40.519 --> 00:45:46.480 true. Um. It's really one of the one of the one that's really 624 00:45:46.480 --> 00:45:50.679 easy to propagate because it does kind of look like it when you look at 625 00:45:50.719 --> 00:45:53.400 the animal. Hell I I mean, if if someone tied up my nuts, 626 00:45:53.400 --> 00:45:58.119 I probably help dessert it too. But the reality is that the flank 627 00:45:58.199 --> 00:46:01.639 straps sits in front of the high aimed legs and it's a physical impossibility for 628 00:46:01.719 --> 00:46:06.400 it to come anywhere near the genitals of the animal. The strap is designed 629 00:46:06.440 --> 00:46:10.159 to irritate the animal, much like someone gripping below your armpit. You want 630 00:46:10.239 --> 00:46:14.599 them to stop, sure, but there's not any pain associated with it. 631 00:46:15.000 --> 00:46:16.960 The competition last seconds and the animals trained to kick, jump, and spin. 632 00:46:17.119 --> 00:46:21.760 Once the writer releases the flank rope, the tension is released. Most 633 00:46:21.760 --> 00:46:24.880 importantly, an animals simply will not buck our bronk if the flank rope is 634 00:46:24.920 --> 00:46:29.800 too tight, which is not the desired effect, and obviously the cowboy would 635 00:46:29.800 --> 00:46:32.719 lose the competition in that case and the prize of money. So final debunk 636 00:46:34.239 --> 00:46:37.960 prize. Animals are used to breed future competitive animals in a very lucrative industry. 637 00:46:38.360 --> 00:46:44.559 Great attention is paid ensuring the animal the genitilia area remains unharmed. Mid 638 00:46:44.639 --> 00:46:49.320 three. The flank strap is sharp or spiky. Flank straps in reality are 639 00:46:49.400 --> 00:46:52.559 lined with sheep skin. Ends are sauce to the touch. It's illegal for 640 00:46:52.719 --> 00:46:55.639 any sharp, friction or rubbing material to be placed on the strap. Myth 641 00:46:55.719 --> 00:47:00.599 four and the shoot which is the cage for the UH. The cowboy comes 642 00:47:00.639 --> 00:47:05.800 out with the horse or the bull riding on top of them UH and the 643 00:47:05.840 --> 00:47:09.159 shoot writers prod or hurt the animals to get them to be angry. Reality 644 00:47:09.880 --> 00:47:14.760 is that the writers actually patting and whispering and doing their best to calm the 645 00:47:14.760 --> 00:47:17.320 animal down, for it's the rider most at risk of being crushed inside the 646 00:47:17.360 --> 00:47:22.840 shoot. Both competitors are nervous for the battle ahead, handlers calling the animal 647 00:47:22.880 --> 00:47:27.920 to prevent it from nervously smashing the rider's legs against the gates um. Although 648 00:47:27.960 --> 00:47:32.239 prouds were once used to eject the animal from the shoot um at rodeo associations 649 00:47:32.280 --> 00:47:37.920 have since outlawed them, as they should. Rodeo animals have hard lives. 650 00:47:37.079 --> 00:47:42.519 Is mid five. Professional swimmers must leave really hard lives training, competing, 651 00:47:42.599 --> 00:47:46.440 traveling, and really not getting very well paid. In comparison, rodio animals 652 00:47:46.559 --> 00:47:51.679 might compete for as little as five minutes a year. They received excellent nutrition 653 00:47:51.719 --> 00:47:55.559 and care and live healthy, long lives. The Calgarrett Calgary Stampede has a 654 00:47:55.599 --> 00:48:00.159 special rodeo forum for retired animals, many of which live out their day is 655 00:48:00.159 --> 00:48:05.679 grazing in open fields. Mid six. Horses and bulls don't buck naturally, 656 00:48:06.679 --> 00:48:12.039 uh falls. Walk up to any untrained horse, throw saddleans back and get 657 00:48:12.079 --> 00:48:15.800 on. Now Try this with a bull. Bucking is a natural reflex for 658 00:48:15.840 --> 00:48:19.480 the animal and their bodies are no more in pain than you would be arching 659 00:48:19.519 --> 00:48:22.920 your back. The physiology of the animal ables the bucking kick without pain or 660 00:48:22.960 --> 00:48:27.559 discover I mean back in the cowboy days. How do you think even today, 661 00:48:27.599 --> 00:48:31.000 how do you think? How do you think busdangs were trained? You 662 00:48:31.079 --> 00:48:36.239 know, new horses that were caught to you know, become trained animals for 663 00:48:36.360 --> 00:48:38.519 people to ride on them. They didn't just go like okay, you know 664 00:48:38.599 --> 00:48:40.960 he put her rope around me, I'm yours, get on, put the 665 00:48:40.960 --> 00:48:44.000 saddle on. No, no, no, no no. There's a lot 666 00:48:44.079 --> 00:48:50.599 of that's probably partially where the rodeos partially came for him. Um is trying 667 00:48:50.639 --> 00:48:53.960 to train a horse and remain on it while it's trying to buck you off. 668 00:48:54.639 --> 00:48:59.880 You know, it's a new experience for the animal. But reality is 669 00:49:00.000 --> 00:49:04.519 it's a natural reflex for these animals just to buck um to get something off 670 00:49:04.559 --> 00:49:09.599 its back. Miss seven. Animals buck because they're scared. Also, false 671 00:49:09.679 --> 00:49:15.880 train is often comment that rodeo horses are team just don't jump on them. 672 00:49:15.760 --> 00:49:20.039 And that's true. If you go to uh if you if you go to 673 00:49:20.119 --> 00:49:22.880 the pens right before the rodeo starts, you see all the animals. They're 674 00:49:22.920 --> 00:49:28.119 all there for you to view and inspect. And the animals are calm and 675 00:49:28.159 --> 00:49:31.519 relax Some are kind of taking a nap or summer grazing on the food. 676 00:49:31.960 --> 00:49:35.559 Um. But in any case, they're not scared, they're not terrified, 677 00:49:35.559 --> 00:49:39.440 they're not wild eyed. Um. They're generally pretty calm, very well cared 678 00:49:39.480 --> 00:49:44.559 for. You can see everything that's provided for them. UM. A rodeo 679 00:49:44.639 --> 00:49:47.320 bowl shouldn't charge you unless it feels threatened. All the same, it's not 680 00:49:47.400 --> 00:49:52.320 wise to play with bulls, but rode animals strut like any trampion athletes. 681 00:49:52.360 --> 00:49:54.599 They exhibit no signs of distress or abuse, which can easily be seen an 682 00:49:54.599 --> 00:50:00.360 animal behavior. Bucking is not a signal of fear. It's again a natural 683 00:50:00.400 --> 00:50:02.320 event. There are events that still leave me an easy. Calf roping, 684 00:50:02.320 --> 00:50:06.280 in particular, because the animals are young, the action abrupt, and the 685 00:50:06.280 --> 00:50:08.719 possibility of harm in the calf might be higher than with horses and bulls. 686 00:50:09.280 --> 00:50:14.639 Yet roping is a common practice on farms. Hypocritical of a guy who enjoys 687 00:50:14.679 --> 00:50:21.239 a good veal schnitzel um totally. But agribusiness and and vegetarianism is another debate 688 00:50:21.280 --> 00:50:24.320 for another time, animal rights activists have done important work drawing attention to animal 689 00:50:24.360 --> 00:50:30.159 abuse, ensuring that standards are created and monitored and unscrupulous practices are not tolerated. 690 00:50:30.760 --> 00:50:34.599 But to outlaw animals performing tasks they are physically adapted to perform robs them 691 00:50:34.639 --> 00:50:37.280 with the very purpose for their being. The happiest dogs have ever seen are 692 00:50:37.320 --> 00:50:43.119 sled dogs, not wolfhounds living in a one bedroom downtown apartment. Okay, 693 00:50:44.679 --> 00:50:49.559 so all that said, or let's leave the rodeo. Um, let's see 694 00:50:49.639 --> 00:50:54.320 the welfare and uh abuse claims all behind. Let's move on here. Um 695 00:50:54.559 --> 00:50:57.840 tips. I'm gonna give you a couple of quick tips if you decide to 696 00:50:58.239 --> 00:51:00.360 attend to rodeo, if you think it's for you, or you want to 697 00:51:00.400 --> 00:51:05.639 try something new, or you're coming to SoCal from I don't know, uh, 698 00:51:06.280 --> 00:51:10.480 Ukraine on a visit. And if you never see the rodeo and you 699 00:51:10.519 --> 00:51:15.320 want a little piece of the Midwest while you're here in SoCal Um, here's 700 00:51:15.320 --> 00:51:19.679 some tips I want to give you. Bring a stadium seat. They really 701 00:51:19.800 --> 00:51:22.079 do make a difference, at least for me, and I'm a pretty big 702 00:51:22.119 --> 00:51:25.800 guy. Uh. These these these things are amazing and they let you sit 703 00:51:25.880 --> 00:51:30.800 in your seat for hours and hours with you know, in comfort. Um, 704 00:51:30.960 --> 00:51:34.239 after three hours of sitting in a metal stand, and more likely four 705 00:51:34.320 --> 00:51:37.079 or five. If you are getting here early for a good seat, you're 706 00:51:37.239 --> 00:51:40.840 behind is gonna be hurting and so or you're gonna have to get up um, 707 00:51:42.440 --> 00:51:45.480 or you're just gonna be miserable. Stadium seats are being what they are. 708 00:51:45.320 --> 00:51:52.440 UM, if you can, They're only twenty bucks at Walmart or I've 709 00:51:52.440 --> 00:51:54.840 seen him at Big five different locations. Get him on Amazon. Uh. 710 00:51:54.920 --> 00:52:00.360 Some nicer ones cost more, but twenty bucks should get you by for much 711 00:52:00.400 --> 00:52:04.800 more comfortable experience at the rodeo. Uh. Tip two, you can bring 712 00:52:04.920 --> 00:52:07.119 water. I tested this with three rodeos. Each time I was able to 713 00:52:07.159 --> 00:52:13.119 walk in with a sixty four o UM hydro flask. And I was able 714 00:52:13.159 --> 00:52:15.119 to walk in anytime, no inspection, no pouring it out to make sure 715 00:52:15.159 --> 00:52:20.199 it was not you know, alcohol, Hey let me go um. And 716 00:52:20.239 --> 00:52:23.000 that certainly beats paying five dollars for a bottle of water whatever the vendors are 717 00:52:23.000 --> 00:52:27.760 trying to charge. Tip three, don't sit next to the stairs and the 718 00:52:27.840 --> 00:52:30.119 stands. I mean this mistake a few days ago at the Sheriff's rodeo. 719 00:52:30.719 --> 00:52:36.519 This was very distracting as they had people constantly either walking by and making noise 720 00:52:36.639 --> 00:52:39.559 or talking, bumping into me, or people inching their way down. They 721 00:52:39.599 --> 00:52:45.199 pack stand to the stairway so they could go get an ice cream or um 722 00:52:45.239 --> 00:52:49.280 or a hot dog or something, saying excuse me, sorry, just getting 723 00:52:49.320 --> 00:52:52.039 by here. Oh so I'm sorry, apologies, it's just it's annoying. 724 00:52:52.119 --> 00:52:57.239 Go sit, sit somewhere in the middle, or go sit in the corner 725 00:52:57.599 --> 00:53:00.480 unless you have to get up constantly, go use the restroom for some reason. 726 00:53:00.159 --> 00:53:05.159 Um. If that's the case, I I don't know if I would 727 00:53:05.159 --> 00:53:07.159 sit and stands at all, I might go try and find somewhere on the 728 00:53:07.199 --> 00:53:12.719 side. But if you can't sit somewhere in the middle or in my case, 729 00:53:12.960 --> 00:53:16.159 sometimes I sit all the way at the end just because you know, 730 00:53:16.199 --> 00:53:20.079 I won't be bothered by people trying to get by and in stracted me right 731 00:53:20.119 --> 00:53:22.639 in the middle of our rodeo event that I'm trying to watch. Um. 732 00:53:22.719 --> 00:53:23.679 So, anyways, a couple of final thoughts here, I just want to 733 00:53:23.679 --> 00:53:27.960 add um attending a rodeo and so okay will give you a piece of the 734 00:53:28.000 --> 00:53:31.639 Midwest Country lifestyle straight out of Texas or Oklahoma. UM, especially true if 735 00:53:31.639 --> 00:53:37.239 you're visiting from afar. Um. I attend rodeos because I like the country, 736 00:53:37.320 --> 00:53:39.039 vibes, the people, the food, and of course the skill of 737 00:53:39.119 --> 00:53:45.000 both livestocks and cowboys and cowgirls performing. It's certainly worth a bit of your 738 00:53:45.039 --> 00:53:50.320 time if you're around so Okale when there's a rodeo. UM. So you 739 00:53:50.400 --> 00:53:52.639 know, I might. I don't know if I'd go to rodeos all the 740 00:53:52.760 --> 00:53:53.920 time, but I'm I might. I might make it a habit to go 741 00:53:54.000 --> 00:54:00.239 to yearly, maybe once because the Sheriff's Rodeo is attended all right, takes 742 00:54:00.280 --> 00:54:05.880 place every every year, and they usually have three days of events, so 743 00:54:06.000 --> 00:54:08.800 I might go to one. I may go to the finals in Las Vegas 744 00:54:08.880 --> 00:54:13.840 just to say I did it. But I'm hardly just like sports, just 745 00:54:13.920 --> 00:54:19.199 like baseball football that I'm just basically trying new things with this podcast, and 746 00:54:19.400 --> 00:54:22.960 I've never really done a sporting event. Um. And when I first attended 747 00:54:23.079 --> 00:54:28.280 rodeos and saw some of those events take place, I was certainly concerned as 748 00:54:28.280 --> 00:54:32.440 an animal over but I just don't buy it that these animals are being abused 749 00:54:32.519 --> 00:54:37.760 or hurt. And you know, I'm not convinced. And if somebody out 750 00:54:37.760 --> 00:54:40.880 there wants to convince me or show me some reson proof that's happening in today's 751 00:54:40.960 --> 00:54:46.920 rodeo, UM specifically pr c A or Professional bull Riders, the two biggest 752 00:54:47.280 --> 00:54:51.239 uh organizations. And you know, by all I mean show me the proof, 753 00:54:51.840 --> 00:54:58.039 but I just don't see it. Um So. Um I'm not trying 754 00:54:58.079 --> 00:55:00.280 to try to blind eye here, Joe. Letting prove it to if you 755 00:55:00.360 --> 00:55:04.559 want. But um I I like the country vibes, you know, bring 756 00:55:04.639 --> 00:55:08.239 a little piece of the country to uh urbanized so cal you know, don't 757 00:55:08.280 --> 00:55:15.360 for surfing and uh um Hollywood not not throwing a rope and catching a calf 758 00:55:15.480 --> 00:55:19.960 trying to run away from you, you know, like they did for generations. 759 00:55:20.719 --> 00:55:24.079 Um So, anyways, I do recommend rodeos for families or even individuals 760 00:55:24.400 --> 00:55:28.800 or even couples, especially the Sheriff's rodeo because you can always go dancing with 761 00:55:28.880 --> 00:55:35.199 your date after the main event. Um. But um, I do recommend 762 00:55:35.239 --> 00:55:37.119 it. It's it's a little uh, it's a little piece of culture of 763 00:55:38.159 --> 00:55:43.840 an otherwise huge United States, you know us on the coast coastal elite folks 764 00:55:43.880 --> 00:55:45.599 you know over here in l A or New York. You know, there's 765 00:55:45.599 --> 00:55:50.000 a lot of this we don't see, and uh, you know it's good. 766 00:55:50.119 --> 00:55:52.000 Uh, it's kind of good to see, to see another way of 767 00:55:52.039 --> 00:55:55.400 life. I guess for lack of better words, UM, any case, 768 00:55:57.199 --> 00:56:00.440 I guess I'm gonna end it there. But that's the Sheriff Rodeo had the 769 00:56:00.480 --> 00:56:04.360 hatch By Rodeo and the Spirit Rodeo, and there are a couple other rodeo 770 00:56:04.360 --> 00:56:07.599 events and socale. So if you're doing what I'm doing, you're trying new 771 00:56:07.679 --> 00:56:13.639 things, or if you know you just want to go see what a rodeo 772 00:56:13.719 --> 00:56:15.360 is about, you know you should do it. I think you should see 773 00:56:15.400 --> 00:56:20.840 for yourself. Don't go online and see both sides debated out on your abusing 774 00:56:20.840 --> 00:56:23.719 animals and no, we're we never even abuse anything. You know, I 775 00:56:23.760 --> 00:56:29.679 don't, don't play that game. Just just go see for yourself, and 776 00:56:29.920 --> 00:56:32.679 you know you decide, you see see what your own eyes, what you're 777 00:56:32.800 --> 00:56:37.639 looking at. Um, everything's open for you to see. So anyways, 778 00:56:37.639 --> 00:56:43.800 that's gonna do it for this episode. UM. As far as this week's 779 00:56:43.920 --> 00:56:47.480 upcoming episode, I'm kind of debating between two things right now. UM, 780 00:56:47.760 --> 00:56:52.639 I think what I'm gonna do is tell you what I'm debating between, and 781 00:56:52.199 --> 00:57:00.199 uh maybe, uh maybe just pick one one or the other, because I 782 00:57:00.400 --> 00:57:06.559 actually don't I'm so busy these days. I don't actually have anything technically planned 783 00:57:06.599 --> 00:57:10.400 at the moment. But um, I got things planned for the weeks after 784 00:57:10.519 --> 00:57:14.239 that. But this week it's just a lot of school work and a lot 785 00:57:14.320 --> 00:57:19.519 of work, and uh, I'm not quite sure what I'm gonna do exactly. 786 00:57:19.639 --> 00:57:25.639 I got a couple of things lined up. Um well, I think, 787 00:57:25.880 --> 00:57:30.320 uh wow, am I gonna make a decision right now what I'm doing 788 00:57:30.400 --> 00:57:34.360 this week? Um, it's a it's a it's a it's a cross right 789 00:57:34.400 --> 00:57:40.119 now between going to Palm Springs or going to Pismo Beach. And between these 790 00:57:40.199 --> 00:57:46.599 two there's one rental company there that I want to check out, and it's 791 00:57:46.639 --> 00:57:52.719 called Steve's a TV Rentals. And I don't know which way I'm gonna go 792 00:57:52.920 --> 00:57:57.239 yet, because if I go to Pismo Beach, hey how cool is that? 793 00:57:57.239 --> 00:58:00.599 Alright? You need to be on the beach and taking the train down 794 00:58:00.639 --> 00:58:02.119 there, and that's just a lot of fun. That's a day trip and 795 00:58:02.159 --> 00:58:07.239 in itself. On the flip side, if I go, you're kind of 796 00:58:07.280 --> 00:58:09.360 limited on the beach there in this in a section. You know, Pismo 797 00:58:09.400 --> 00:58:14.199 Beach one of the few beaches in California where you can actually ride an all 798 00:58:14.199 --> 00:58:16.320 trained vehicle or your car. And now I also just taking a car on 799 00:58:16.400 --> 00:58:20.960 the beach, take an all wheel drive vehicle or a four by four because 800 00:58:21.000 --> 00:58:24.719 your car is gonna get stuck in the sand. But um, I could 801 00:58:24.760 --> 00:58:29.480 do that, or I could go out to Steve's a TV rentals in Palm 802 00:58:29.559 --> 00:58:38.840 Springs And basically there's this huge, massive off road UM park out there called 803 00:58:38.920 --> 00:58:44.000 Acatello Wells and it just goes off rever and there's so much to explore and 804 00:58:44.159 --> 00:58:46.599 see and experience and a lot of ways. The only way to get out 805 00:58:46.639 --> 00:58:51.559 there with a four by four in a TV. So I'm stuck between the 806 00:58:51.639 --> 00:58:52.920 two. I don't know which one I want to do yet, but I 807 00:58:52.960 --> 00:58:57.199 think that's what we're gonna do next week and I'll give you a full report. 808 00:58:57.280 --> 00:59:00.960 How don't your costs? What it was like the experience? Um? 809 00:59:00.519 --> 00:59:04.599 Did I break down in the middle of the desert and uh and I have 810 00:59:04.679 --> 00:59:07.039 to get rescued by a helicopter? Or did I explore and find some cool 811 00:59:07.119 --> 00:59:12.239 unique things and uh? I guess we'll see you. Then you'll know next 812 00:59:12.280 --> 00:59:14.920 week what I do, which right, decide which way decided to go if 813 00:59:14.920 --> 00:59:17.480 I decided to head out east of the desert or west to the beach. 814 00:59:19.639 --> 00:59:22.000 Um any case, that's that's what's I think we're gonna do this week. 815 00:59:22.639 --> 00:59:24.519 Um. And the reason why I'm announcing it instead of giving you a hint 816 00:59:24.639 --> 00:59:29.719 with piano rendition is because I have no idea how to make a piano rendition 817 00:59:30.480 --> 00:59:32.840 for an a TV. Right. Maybe I could have just had a car 818 00:59:34.199 --> 00:59:37.239 or a quad revving up over and over again to end it with. But 819 00:59:38.679 --> 00:59:42.440 we'll see which a way I go with it. Um. I'm probably literally 820 00:59:42.480 --> 00:59:44.639 going to the side here in the next few hours which way I'm gonna go. 821 00:59:44.920 --> 00:59:47.079 Just buy my little rental and go do it.
